Palms (Several Genres)
Trees of an alone trunk that develop a plume of leaves at the expense of an only terminal yolk, which we associate to exotic environments and climates. In several spanish regions, they grow in great numbers.
Palm trees are monocotiledoneas plants, in a same way, their seeds only have one leave on reserve, like cereal and herbs. This circumstance determines all its development.
In general, it has nothing more that a trunk ( false trunk called race or estirpite) or, like its happening in some varieties of Spain, several trunks that join in the base; in any case, they do not branch out like 'normal' trees do. This is due to the fact that an alone yolk, which one finds in the middle of the plume of leaves, takes charge of the growth of the whole palm (in those of multiple trunk there is one in the end of every trunk).
Because of being for several years at the floors level, where the yolk of growth, vital for the tree, is very vulnerable, many palms have developed defence systems with the shape of sharp thorns, with exception of the ones that live in the Indican zone where animals, that could suppose a danger for their delicate vital organ, do not exist.
The roots of these plants are made of fibrous type, thin and very numerous, which makes the transplat, even in an adult age, easy.
The flowers are placed in separated by sexes plumes and as a result they give a type of fruit similar as berry, as knowned datiles, in an enormous assortment of forms and sizes.
In general, there are two types os palm tress leaves: those of palm type, with a fan aspect, and the pinnadas, with a design similar to the feathers of a bird. Between both types we find the so called leaves costapalmadas, on wich the axis bows by the insertion of the foliated segments.
Like it happens in other type of plants, palm trees leaves are made by independent or welded in between segments. These leaves recieve the name of folíolos, and in many species, they have a grooved disposition that, in the ones that show palmed leaves, give as a result an structure similar to a fan that wasnt completly open.
Is in the petioles of the leaves were palm trees show their defensive thorns, wich manage to reach a considerable size and hardness. The part were the leave joins the trunk, called “vaina”, has the responsability of the habitual marks that give the trunk its typical aspect, that cahnges according to the species.
Taken Care
A sunny situacion becomes indsipensable for the cultivacion of any palm tree spicies. They need a warm temperature during the hole year that does not go down approximately 20 º C average. This has some exceptions, but except in a few cases, normally no palm supports frosts below a few degrees under zero.
In general terms, its posible to say that palm trees need to live in free and slight areas that do not retain the dampness in exces. Anyway, they need a minimal level of water, even if its found on the floors low caps.
The classic oasis is an example of wich are the ajustament limits of water lack of many of these plants.
Mostly of the palm trees admit the cultivacion into containers for what they can be in use for decorating terraces, porchs, walks, etc.
